Rachael Taplin - Founder and Head of Sales and Marketing
Rachael who?
Well what can I say? I'm a proud mum first and foremost, and a happy, successful business woman second.
I am not an academic – I've got 4 'O' levels and 2 'A' levels (in music and drama, do they still count!!)
But despite this I have run my own business for over 12 years, using what I learned from a career in marketing and advertising. One of my first jobs was selling radio advertising space for BRMB Radio part of the Capital Radio group. I loved dealing with small businesses helping put together effective campaigns to make sure we generated more business for them.
I am the founder of Mums in Control and proud to have helped literally hundreds of women set up 'work from home' businesses over the last 3 years. Yes it is hard work (No get rich quick schemes here) but very rewarding, the highs certainly outweigh the lows.
After I had Annabel I lost a lot of confidence and felt that I really couldn't contribute to the business world. It was an encounter with a client in 2001 that made me realise that despite being a mum, I still had a lot to offer in business. The client told me the only reason he had placed his £200,000 advertising budget with me was because of his belief in what I could achieve for him and his bottom line (no pressure there then!). I haven't looked back since!
There are days when I can't believe that I have built such a successful company and I am so proud of all our editors that work with us so that we remain the UK’s number magazine for working mums. I remember exactly what it's like to start something from scratch and while at the beginning I thought I'd never get the hand of things, slowly but surely I did.
So what else do I have to offer? Well advertising and marketing is what I know and love. I am most at home when selling, and yes I love to cold call and set myself a challenge to sell ice to the Eskimos. Not only do I love selling but I understand the advertising industry inside out. I know what it's like to be a small business that just wants us to make sure we sell a few extra bird tables at their quiet time of year to make the difference between a profit and a loss!!
I have also worked with over 400 women over the last three years, providing training and development to help them run their own community magazine. Again this is my passion and very much my comfort zone.
Mums in Control is already a well known national brand name and by joining us you will become part of that success.
